ITVS.

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) funds, presents, and promotes award-winning documentaries and dramas on public television and cable, innovative new media projects on the Web, and the Emmy Award-winning weekly series Independent Lens.

ITVS’ Women & Girls Lead Global (WGLG) campaign uses the power of documentary film to share stories, spark dialogue, and build solutions to the most pressing problems facing women and girls.

Project

WGLG wanted to design an innovation experience that would allow its global staff to identify new ideas and solutions that might help to facilitate campaign outcomes. Together we designed a one-day collaborative technology challenge engaging experts from the fields of human centered design, technology, maternal child health, gender and masculinity, women’s empowerment, evaluation and media. Working in teams, our experts spent 8-hours designing (and in some cases building) country-specific interventions that could support WGLG to realize each country’s campaign goals.

In collaboration with Map the Mind, a visual facilitation firm, we designed templates that enabled each group to brainstorm, prioritize and then design their innovation collaboratively (see above)

Impact

India: WGLG launched the Hero Academy in India, targeting young men with film-based gender sensitization curriculum
Bangladesh: WGLG is working on a digital evaluation platform based in part on the work done by the Bangladesh team.
Peru: WGLG launched a participatory radio program produced by a group of real teens and parents that encourages dialogue within families and spreads awareness about sexual and reproductive health among adolescents and their parents.
